Working in the Era of Digital Transformations

Emerging business strategies, trends, and disrupters are driving an enormous shift in the way organizations to function these days. Everything related to a workspace has been disrupted by various experiments i.e. from closed cabins to cubicles to an open floor with everyone working together. Shared workspaces have surpassed traditional workspaces and are becoming an obvious choice for the Indian workforce. Technology has played an integral role in this transition. With the invention of personal computers back in 1970, little could be imagined about the era of technology. Today, everyday tasks are impossible to imagine without technological interventions. It has transformed the way people work and function at the workplace.

Technological advancements slowly became the need of the hour as the workplace environment over the last decade became more competitive and complex. Innovations in technology have transformed the workplace where employees can collaborate, communicate and connect with each other, thereby, boosting employee morale and increasing workplace productivity. According to a Deloitte report, a Manager saved 43 minutes a month with improved workplace tools. This has been made possible because hefty paperwork and long bills have been replaced by easy communication and cost management options. Similarly, customization and collaborations have been made available by various applications and softwares. This is just the tip of the iceberg of how technology is now maneuvering daily work at offices.

With the emerging workspace ecosystem, coworking has now become an indispensable part of the same. Technology is at the heart of all offerings at coworking spaces. The members of shared
workspaces are incredibly varied, and their technology needs are equally diverse. In the years to come, walkable treadmill workstations, pedal tables, and virtual assistant integrated desks, smart sensing technologies will redefine the concept of flexibility at work. Furthermore, the future of work will be creative with a tinge of virtual reality. IoT is expected to lead with voice-activated systems, wearable technology such as wearable glasses, embedded chips, and wrist devices connected with the work desks thereby giving more flexibility to work on the go. Laptops and smartphones will become redundant and AI will take over shared workspaces and gradually transform them into self-sufficient workspaces.

Technological advancements have further enabled the workforce to achieve their full potential. Leveraging IoT and integrating it with AI, coworking space can be transformed into smarter, dynamic and interactive offices. Automating the entry; exit; improving security; controlling energy consumption and utilization, and enabling cashless payments allows professionals to work in an accelerated environment. In the 1980s, it was hard to believe how personal computers would transform our lives. Similarly, today it is difficult to envision what AI will mean to us over the coming decades. The IoT’s growth, in turn, drives an exponential rise in the volumes of data gathered, providing meaningful insights for future strategies. Individuals within an organization are more connected than ever. Cloud computing, web conferences, instant messaging and e-diaries have enabled better communication around the world and within the organization. The ability of devices to interact with individuals provide for a personally curated workspace that inspires productivity. Hence, by facilitating the nexus of communications, IoT will define the future of coworking space and the workspace ecosystem at large.

It is evident that if an organization has to be successful in this era of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, they have to adapt to the technological advancements and cater to the clientele needs/workforce requirements. As machines advance and acquire more cutting-edge performance capabilities that match or exceed human capabilities, the adoption of automation will pick up. Technology is slowly and steadily becoming a compulsion and not an option.
