Foundation of a Start Up - Awfis

Essentials of laying the foundation of a start-up

blog11Wherever you look around, you will find hundreds of people with ideas and wanting to make a mark of their own in the world with the next “big idea”. But it is truly very few, who can make their impact with their dedication and hardwork. Hearing Steve Jobs’ story or Mark Zuckerberg’s few crazy seconds of courage may excite you and make you want to start your own business, but hold your horses. It’s not so easy. There are various factors that go in while laying the foundation for a startup. Barring the enthusiasm and excitement, a lot of work goes in to make an idea truly successful. Here are some-

1. Define your vision
At first, everything may excite you. You would want to do 10 things at one go, but slow down your process. Stop, think and chalk down what exactly do you want to change or improve? Be passionate about your idea, define it well and write down how you’d go about achieving it, whilst dividing short term and long term goals.

2. Learn to track data
The one thing that’s growing faster than people ideating, is the explosion of social media and Google Analytics. Track key metrics and data from the launch of your website to gain valuable insights into how people are reacting and interacting with your product online. What’s better than Google analytics? Direct feedback from your customers to give you a true understanding of where your product stands in the real world.

3. Be scalable
Various startups at the beginning make the mistake of taking on too many employees. One must remember that the higher the staff, higher the expense and higher the burn rate. “Too many cooks spoil the broth” is a famous saying for a reason. The more people get involved, the harder it is for everybody to be on the same page. Don’t always have the habit of scaling up, scaling down is vital as well.

4. Know your customer well
One of the vitals in laying the foundation of a startup is knowing your customer well. Include specific and unique characteristics of your customers, things that would really connect them with your product and work on those advantages.

5. Hire a trustworthy accountant
With you running around getting operations in order, meeting potential investors and completing deadlines, your account books may bite the dust, which is why you need to hire an account that you can trust. Not to forget, that a good account will help you with tax planning, will know the state laws, sales tax issues, etc. Your accountant must be familiar with startup venture laws.

6. Strong but simple name
It may seem like the easiest thing to do but coming up with a name that is impactful and still feels home to customers may keep you up at night. A right name will go a long way and will show what exactly your company is about. It’s always good to sit down and chalk down a list of potential names. Remember it must be easy to spell, easy to pronounce and definitely easy to remember.

7. Getting licenses and permits in place
Along with a business license, it is important to get your other licenses and laws in place. Make sure your licenses are applicable in your statue and research on every law before you start a business. Don’t assume a law doesn’t apply to you.

There are various other steps in order to give your dream idea that boost, like finding a tech expert or the necessary actions for launching a website. But once you have these steps noted, be patient and extremely focused in order for your big idea to become the next big thing!

Lay a strong foundation of your start-up by choosing business centre in Andheri West, Mumbai or shared office space in Hosur Road, Bengaluru.

College Graduate - Awfis

Journey of a college graduate to a budding entrepreneur

blog111Tired of those endless exams, waking up at 6am for lectures, meeting excruciating deadlines, can’t wait to get out of college for a simpler life? Well, if you’re looking into starting your own big thing as a budding entrepreneur, let us tell you that things don’t change much. Academic exams are replaced with real life tests, waking up at 6 am may just mean having sleepless nights altogether and meeting deadlines would’ve never scared you more. Experts say hard-working graduates that are interested in starting their own startup should explore their entrepreneurial side, but should definitely be prepared for an uphill battle. Here are some tips that can help future college graduates to become their own boss-

Find something you’re passionate about
When initially deciding what industry to pursue, students should find their real needs and be passionate about bringing about a change. Their business ideas should fill in the gaps which were currently in the market place. It’s simple, the people who are successful are the ones who really loved what they did and the reason they loved it is because they believed in it.

Know how to network
Networking with people in the same industry is essential for getting a business off the ground and to give it that boost it requires. Students should focus on finding already-successful businesspeople in a particular field and learn from their techniques, experiences along with their mistakes. Don’t ever hesitate to contact them, go to their seminars, their talks, read their articles or their blogs. Learn how they’re doing it and find a way to learn from them and incorporate it in your big idea.

Find a mentor to provide you with valuable insights into the ups and downs of their own entrepreneurial journey. It is vital to be respectful while asking for advice, but be careful not to overextend those relationships and take advantage of it.

Use social media to your advantage
The explosion of social media in the past few years has allowed new businesses to establish and market themselves extremely well. Businesses have only recently discovered the full potential of social media to market their businesses, but Gen Y graduates grew up with technology at their fingertips and can use tools like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to their advantage, with just a click away!

Learn from feedback—good and bad
No one gets everything right at the start, expect to make mistakes, but learn from them and resolve them quickly. Any kind of constructive criticism should be valued as a learning experience. Take the feedback in a positive stride!

Learn patience
While it’s important to have confidence in a startup, be practical when it comes to the success growth. Gen Y graduates have short attention spans and expect immediate results. Keep your vision close to your heart, but be smart about your long term vision and actions.

Although it’s natural to experience mistakes and frustrations, it’s important for young entrepreneurs to avoid getting discouraged, instead, focus on how it will make the business stronger in the long run and how much one will be learning at a young age.

Remember, that entrepreneurs at a young age are actually harder on themselves than others. Celebrate milestones, it always helps. Take these points into consideration and have a smooth transition from college to the corporate world.

Look for co-working space in Qutab, New Delhi or shared office space in Powai, Mumbai provided by Awfis start your journey from a college student to becoming a budding entrepreneur.

Detecting, engaging and responding to cyber attacks : Acalvio

#inspiringstories@Awfis is an initiative by Awfis Editorial Team to showcase the brilliant business ideas and the journey of our startup member community.

Today, cyber attacks that mainly affect large enterprises have entered domestic homes as well. There are 1000’s of data breaches reported each year and things are not getting better. The worst news in this cyber warfare is that it takes around 200 days before an enterprise even becomes aware of a compromise let alone stopping/preventing it. This is like having a stranger living in your house for nearly an year and you are not even aware of it. Clearly, faster compromise detection is a first problem that needs to be solved before dealing with the attacker.

When large companies like Sony, Target, Home Depot or Cyber Security companies like EMC/RSA or even USA NSA (remember Snow-den?) are unable to protect themselves from cyber-attacks despite their huge investments in cyber security, who will protect individuals from such cyber-attacks like ransom-ware or car hijacking with the advent of IoT?

Acalvio provides Advanced Threat Defense (ATD) solutions to detect, engage and respond to malicious activity inside the perimeter. The solutions are based on Deception and Data Science. Acalvio enables customers to benefit from defense in depth, reduce false positives and provide security.

“I believe, for our own benefit we need to solve/control this thorny cyber security problem and not wait for the existing security companies to solve something they have not solved since the advent of Internet,” says Raj Gopalakrishna who is one of the co-founder and Chief Architect of Acalvio and is based in Bengaluru, while the other co-founders are based in Bay Area. Their team also consists of world class R&D experts as well as enthusiastic engineers.

TEAM ACALVIO AT AWFIS CENTRE
TEAM ACALVIO AT AWFIS CENTRE

The inspiration for the Acalvio approach comes from Mother Nature. The simple moth has survived for over 190 million years due to the beautiful concept of Deception. The passion fruit vine has survived for millions of years despite the Zebra butterfly. The immunity system is ever evolving to fight the evolving virus and bacteria. The battles in the natural world over 100s of millions of years show that Deception is the most powerful and proven security technique. As the famous Chinese Military General and strategist, Sun Tzu, once observed – “All Warfare is based upon Deception”.

Acalvio was founded to bring this concept of Deception along with Data Science to Cyber warfare. They want to leverage Deception Technologies to lay traps to detect an attacker, confuse the attacker, slowdown the attack, divert the attacker etc. Acalvio is based on building and selling on premise cyber-security solution (software) to Enterprises and Government. They also offer cloud based solutions in 2nd year.

When faced with tough days, Acalvio knows well to snap out of it and excel. They are well funded by marquee VC’s including Accel Partners and Ignition Partners. In order to completely focus on creating IP driven security software, Mr. Raj along with his team works out of Awfis that takes care of all his ancillary needs helping him run his business smoothly.

Acalvio will change the way cyber attacks are detected and responded. They  will change the security world. They see any and all organization as a potential Acalvio customer as every region of the world and almost all vertical are victims of cyber-attacks.

We at Awfis think that Mr. Raj’s entrepreneurial journey is motivational and we are proud to have such inspiring stories building in our centres!

This story is based on the interview of Mr. Raj Gopalakrishna, Co-Founder – Acalvio by Awfis Editorial Team.

Exercises to Supercharge - Awfis

Exercises to supercharge your productivity

Exercising often falls to the bottom of your list of priorities, especially if you’re a budding entrepreneur! But don’t worry, you are not the only one. Everyday, you challenge yourself to get back in shape by joining a gym, dieting or exercising. But, some important meeting or urgent assignment comes along and you miss your exercise routine.

Before you know it, years have passed and your doctor appointments have become more frequent than before. You must have heard it a million times before but exercises will help you in more ways than one. You need to take out some time everyday to follow these 5 simple exercises that will give you great results, keep you physically fit and improve your mental health as well.

blog

Here are some simple exercises that will help you gain the benefits of a regular exercise without interrupting your busy schedule.

1. RUN

If you are not taking out enough time to run, you are doing yourself wrong. Studies have shown that aerobic exercises might be the most beneficial for brain health. Your brain loves running, cycling and it is able to think well, when you engage in these activities. Running along long tracks will give you time and space to think and explore your thoughts. Running is a good way to escape your busy schedules and free your mind from the chaotic and nosy environment. Also, it is important to remember that you don’t need to be a marathon runner; moderate running is actually healthier than running long distances.

2. DO BURPEES

When stuck in crazy deadlines and projects, work hours creep into your sleep time and there you are pulling a 12 hour shift. The last thing you want to do is come home, change and workout. And that’s when you turn to burpees. Do four sets of 25 and you’re ready to conquer your day within 15-20 minutes. Burpees increases strength, stamina which will boost your day and push you harder to meet those deadlines and ace your presentation.

3. STRETCH

If you haven’t been stretching, it’s time to start. Stretching isn’t all about bending over and touching your toes for a minute. It’s time to incorporate a short stretching routine in your lifestyle. It’ll help you deal with the stress that comes along with being an entrepreneur. Stress restricts blood flow, causing tension in your muscles and lower back. So, free thse muscles that store tension by stretching your lower back, shoulders and neck. Which is why, yoga is such a popular form of exercise.

4. PUSHUPS AND DIPS

The standard push up activates nearly every muscle in your body. This will benefit you greatly resulting in toned muscles and increased strength. If you’re not convinced about incorporating a push up routine into your exercise program, continue reading the blog to uncover the real benefits of these exercises in your routine.

5. FARTLEK TRAINING

Fartlek running involves varying your pace throughout your run, alternating between fast segments and slow jogs. Fartleks are far more unstructured in comparison to traditional interval training programs. Work-rest intervals can be based on how your body feels. Fartlek training puts a little extra stress on your system, which will eventually lead to faster speeds and greater thresholds.

It is difficult to adapt to a lifestyle that caters to your health needs along with your ambitions and dreams. But focusing on these exercises will definitely benefit your entrepreneurial lifestyle and give you the motivation and jumpstart you need. So, set that alarm off and kickstart your day in the most refreshing manner possible!

Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence and focused effort. Check out Awfis co-working spaces in Koramangla, Bengaluru or business centres in Powai for an environment that motivates you to be productive.

Travel is all about experience however, virtual world has compromised the very crux of travel industry, resulting in lack of recommendations, poor service, customer insecurity, and inconvenience in coordination. What Does Your Company Do - Awfis

The perfect answer to “What does your company do?”

You spend years working on that dream idea and spending sleepless nights working hard to build your empire. A business that you are proud of and have given in your blood, sweat and tears. You know what all it has taken for you to get there, but how are you going to portray that?

We live in a world which is in a constant state of flux, new products and ideas are created all the time, but people aren’t willing to spend their money on it, especially if they haven’t heard about it.  That’s why it is important to meet your customer half way, to use language in such a way that your product talks for itself.

how-to-explain-your-company

1. Do not use jargon
While talking about your company, do not use any jargon. Ever. Do not assume that everybody is comfortable and familiar with business terms. Make sure your customers feel home with your product. If you use a particular kind of language, you are making it clear that you are catering only to a group of people who speak that language.

2. Prioritize the needs
Next step, always think what comes first- does your product matter more or your customers’ needs? If you explain a problem that your product solves, your clients will automatically relate to it. Even if your business does pitch itself clearly, its language could become outdated. Explain it in one statement if your product is helping in saving money, making their life easier or giving them new opportunities.

3. Personalize your product
Do not forget to personalize it. Your customer has to relate to your product. Has the problem you are solving affected them? The more interactive you can make your pitch, the higher the chances that your customers will be receptive to it.

4. Build it up, don’t sell it
Don’t try to sell your product at every bell and whistle. It’s vital to create interest and curiosity to make your customer want to find out more. The best way to find out if you’re successful in conveying your idea is by just asking a handful of people what they think your company does. You’ll be surprised at how many different perspectives you’ll get before you can finally chalk out the final plan.

In the end, remember to keep it short. Develop a story that connects with the customer and strikes a chord with them. It is not that difficult. These clear-cut rules will allow you to create an immediate, high-impact connection and help you portray your years of hard work and dedication.

No matter what your company does, we have an inspiring workspace for you. Here, look at business centre in Andheri West, Mumbai or shared office space in South Extention, New Delhi.

Team G-Square at Awfis Centre - Awfis

#inspiringstories@Awfis – One stop solution to plug and play analytics: G-Square Solutions

#inspiringstories@Awfis is an initiative by Awfis Editorial Team to showcase the brilliant business ideas and the journey of our startup member community.

In a world where there is competition everywhere, it is vital to know where your business is heading. And that’s when data analytics come into play. Data analytics help in enhancing organizations’ productivity, topline and bottomline by enabling them with data on the three Ws (Which product to sell, When is the right time to sell and to Whom to sell) and One H (How to pitch through right campaigns). Analytics as an industry is largely underpenetrated across many Indian enterprises especially in the mid and small size sectors. The role of analytics in enhancing organizations’ productivity is not recognized as much. Though globally, it is a very important tool for decision making.

There are very few companies globally who provide plug and play analytics solutions. This dearth of adequate resources gave birth to G-Square Solutions.

To harnesses this huge potential and underpenetration of analytics products and services, Gurpreet Singh and Gopi Suvanam came together to co-found G-Square Solutions. They complement each other in their Analytics, Technology, Marketing and Business Strategy skills essentially required for success of any enterprise. The operating team comprises of young nimble and energetic data scientists and technology associates with experience in analytics and expertise in product development.

Team G-Square at Awfis centre

G-Square has been able to successfully offer services across Banks, NBFCs, Wealth Management companies, Asset Management Companies and Fin-Tech in a short span of less than two years.

G-Square has a B2B approach where they offer SaaS based financial products and also provide services in sales, marketing and risk analytics tailored to the client requirements. Their sweet spot is the Financial Services and Fin-Tech space comprising Banks, wealth management, payment, NBFCs, AMCs and Broking cos in India.
They have a strong expertise in Analytics and apply strong data engineering in each assignment. Fin-Tech and financial domain expertise enables them to solve industry specific requirements. Their uniqueness lies in using their in-house technology and proprietary algorithms for building models along with conventional methods. Their output driven work approach provides a lot of comfort to the clients.

The B2B model and the analytics space is quite challenging in terms of longer sales process cycle, availability of quality manpower and acceptability of products coming from a young startup. Although, they encounter longer sales cycles, ups & downs of sales pressures and product underpricing frequently, it is their strong resolve and credentials, product expertise and industry networking skills that help them in sustaining a strong foothold in the Industry. The urge to keep creating strong, pull-based products to solve business problems and establish a large Global Analytics enterprise keeps them going even in tough times.

Gurpreet says that they wish G-Square to be the most specialised plug and play analytics product provider with a nimble footed approach to client requirements. G-Square aims to be a large global analytics player which solves problems based on their data science solutions.

We at Awfis think that Gurpreet and Gopi’s entrepreneurial journey is motivational and we are proud to have such inspiring stories building in our centres!

Hire A Freelancer - Awfis

#FAQatAwfis: How To Hire A Freelancer?

working-freelancer

Hiring a freelancer is a great way to save money and time. But, since the marketplace is filled with freelancers, you may get flooded with a large number of proposals for a given job. How to make the right decision? Don’t worry, let Awfis help you in hiring the right freelancer for the job-

1.  Do I check the freelancers’ portfolio or just rely on their word?

See if your freelancer can ‘walk the walk’ and not just ‘talk the talk’. The number #1 rule in hiring a freelancer online is, if you can’t see any work examples, then don’t make the hire. Especially if they’re asking for the payment upfront.

2.  How should I keep in constant touch with my freelancer without sounding too clingy?

It’s really important to remember to set the ground rules for communication with your freelancer. Whether it’s by Skype, email, or a weekly phone call, either way, you need to be comfortable with the communication frequency and medium prior to starting any job.

3.  Do I pick the cheapest freelancer?

It can be so tempting to pick the cheapest option when selecting a freelancer but this can more often than not lead to disaster, but be careful when considering an entry-level price point contractor as you do get what you pay for when hiring freelancers.

4.  Should I ask for references?

Just because you’re not hiring a freelancer in the typical face-to-face scenario where you would receive a full CV and do a reference check, does not mean you don’t have the right to at least ask for some form of reference, or even contact a previous client with the freelancer’s permission.

5.  Is it important to get a team player?

This can be a little tricky to determine, but if this is a requirement for you, i.e. your freelancer needs to interact with various members of your team, across complex items, then simply ask them.

6.  How much should I pay them?

It always depends on project milestones. If the project is lengthy and they’re asking for the payment prior working, it does make you skeptical. You may encounter this scenario. But, you do need to be happy with the terms of payment when making your hire.

Do try to sort these things out with your hire before you make an actual hire. Hope we’ve answered most of your questions and set you off on hiring the perfect freelancer for the job!

Do and Donts of a Successful Business - Awfis

Do’s and Don’ts of a Successful Business

blogs

What makes top-listed Businesses successful? What gives them the edge over others?

Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts that would serve as a perfect guide on your road to becoming the next big thin

The Do’s

  •  DO Innovate. The scope for innovation is boundless. Invest more on your Research and Development because they’re the ones who will take you the extra mile. The best way to get the upper hand over your competitors is through originality and innovation.
  • DO it for Yourself. Whatever you’re focusing on, always have your own interest in it. Do what you are passionate about and do it for yourself more than the money. When you do something you love, you’re sure to perform better because your work excites you and leads to your best efforts being put into it.
  • DO have a Strong Work Ethic. From time to time, sacrifices have to be made, risks have to be taken. In order to be the best you need to prioritize your work and give it your all. Give your family time but remember hard work is of utmost importance that is what will take you higher.
  • DO keep an Open Mind. Outsider opinions and new ideas are always a great source for better performance. Be open minded and be ready to accept new techniques of working and other fresh ideas. Being open minded will not only help your business but will also improve employer-employee rapport.
  • DO take Risks and Trust your Gut. Taking risks and failing is nothing more but a lesson in life. You’ll simply learn from your experiences and continue to grow. Trust your gut feeling instead of regretting the fact that you didn’t, decades down the line. Who knows when that little urge to do something lands you your biggest project and success for the business?

The Don’ts

  •  Don’t take hasty Decisions. No matter how important and urgent the task may be, never make hasty decisions. Think it through, take some advice from a mentor and plan your next steps carefully. Hasty decisions can lead to several mistakes which could further impact your business.
  • Don’t ignore Market Information. Always keep your ears open. Any market-related information can be made resourceful. It’s about who acts upon it first. This is what leads to innovations and focusing on new trends. A company coming into the race too late is bound to be unsuccessful.
  • Don’t let failure stop you. At some point of time in your career you’re sure to face failure. Giving into it is only going to impact your business. If Steve Jobs gave in to failure when he was thrown out of Apple, iPhones and iPads would’ve never seen the light of day. His belief in himself is nothing short of an inspiration for future businessmen who may face failure in their journey too.
  • Don’t expect quick success. Success doesn’t come overnight. It needs to be earned. The road to success is a long, painful one but the day you reach the top no one can stop you. All you need to remember is to be patient and keep working hard. Someday your hard work is going to pay off.
  • Don’t do it for the money. When you enter the corporate world you can’t expect big numbers from the very start. In fact most leading businesses start with a loss. Gradually you grow and start earning more. But above it all, don’t do it for the money. Do it for the purpose you saw when you started off. Believe in your purpose and make others follow. It will not only earn you your profits but also make you stand out for the real reason you started off.

Running a business successfully, you definitely need to know the checklist of do’s and don’ts. But before you startup, you need to have workplace. You can have a look at our co-working spaces in Connaught Place, New Delhi or shared office space in MG Road, Bengaluru.

Maintain A Work-Life Balance - Awfis

Steps To Maintain A Work-Life Balance

Steps To Maintain A Work-Life Balance

In today’s ever growing corporate world, everyone is compelled to work hard in order to achieve fame and success for themselves and at the same time to be able to survive in the increasingly competitive market. This calls for a lot of time, money and effort. Prioritizing between your work and personal life can serve as quite a challenge. Let us help you to restore a better-work life balance.

  1. Plan Ahead

When you plan for the upcoming week, make it a point to schedule a sufficient amount towards family time and activities that would give you the perfect breakthrough from the realms of work.

By doing so you’ll always have something to look forward to after a hectic day at work. It would serve as an extra incentive to manage your time efficiently and would thereby lead to fewer cancellations.

  1. Prioritize your work

Always prioritize your task list in order of urgency and preferences. Set your priorities. This will keep you more organised and would help you complete your to-do list systematically, probably giving you more time for your personal life too.

This way you can also set short- term and long-term goals for yourself. It would prove to the upper management that you are able to take charge of your work and putting in the effort to increase efficiency.

  1. Learn to say no

When you’re in the growing stage of your career you’re always open to new opportunities and tend to take up any task offered to you. In doing so you not only over burden and drown yourself in work but also find yourself in a difficult situation back home when you’re unable to give them sufficient time nor do you get a peace of mind for yourself. This is when you realise it’s time you learn to say no to certain jobs. It’s not a sign of weakness but simply a means to create space and time for you, to be able to complete your tasks more efficiently.

  1. Respect your personal time

When you’re at work you focus simply on that and would try to avoid all personal calls at that time. The same should be done during your private time. Respect your personal life just as much as you do for your work. To go back home and still be glued on to your phone, taking work calls or responding to client mails isn’t really doing any justice to your family and your private time.

  1. Exercise and Meditate.

After a busy day at work a little yoga, meditation or gym time would be the perfect stress buster. Exercise and meditation are the best sources of energy chargers and can also help you focus better on your work and think clearly. An hour at the gym with your headphones on would pump you up for whatever there is to come.

Sleep. What most people tend to miss out on or take for granted is their sleep. You may have a set of deadlines to complete or a ton of tasks at hand but without enough sleep you’re only further exhausting yourself and making it strenuous to function well.

  1. Find a mentor

Finally, it’s always a good idea to find yourself a mentor or a personal coach – someone who has it all and has the ability to guide you on your targets, time and work management and ultimately career development.

Hope we’ve set you off on finding the perfect balance between your personal and professional life!
